The main rule with contributing to a Wiki is do not be intimidated. Editing a page is as easy as clicking on one of the many edit tabs in front of you. The rules are:
- Click on the edit tab;
- Type in the changes you wish to make;
- At the bottom of the page click on Save Page --- and that's pretty much that!
Okay, there are refinements to the above basic pitch. To find out more details on how to beautify our Wiki, see what others have done before you. It's easy to find examples, just click on the edit link of the following section. We also have several more advanced pages for the adventurous, starting here!
How to format text
You can enter Italic text but should try to avoid Bold text, at least that is what stylistic purists tell us. See how we use multiple single quotes to signal to the wiki that we want italic or bold (two for italics, three for bold).
Start a new paragraph by simply leaving a blank line! External links are enclosed in single square brackets. How do you specify the words associated with an external link --- the ones the user will click on? Just put the words of this 'anchor text' after the web address but still inside the square brackets, making sure you leave a space between the two. Here is a link to the home page! which we implemented thus:
the home page!
What about local links? They use double square brackets, and the syntax is slightly different in one other significant way! Here is the same link implemented as a local link to the Main Page. How do you specify anchor text for a local link? That's the difference! Separate the page name and the alternate text using a | (pipe) character. Here's an alternate link to the Main Page, and here's how we did it:
an alternate link
See how you can use either a space or an _ underscore, and things will still work, in other words the link Main_Page is the same as saying Main Page. But take note --- names are case-sensitive, so Main_Page is different from Main_page, an occasional source of confusion!
You can even upload images --- first insert something along the lines of: , then click on the link to upload. (Uploading of images has been temporarily disabled but you can still put in the Image:link and then speak to User:Johanvs about uploads!) We discourage huge images, and won't burden the site with large multimedia files.
To put something in a box, start the line with a space!
You can also use other tricks: click on the friendly images above the editing box while in edit mode for examples, and read the jolly old manual.

Other things you can do
The above is merely a taste of what you can do with MediaWiki! There's lots more. For example, here's a simple table:
| Column 1 | Column 2 | Column 3 |
|---|---|---|
| row 1 | cell 1a | cell 1b |
| row 2 | cell 2a | cell 2b |
| cell b | cell c |
