SimMan Familiarisation Checklist
From WickedSim
Here's an introductory checklist used by The Auckland University of Technology Simulation Centre to introduce new students to SimMan. As all content on WickedSim is released under the GNU Free Documentation License, feel free to improve this checklist in a responsible manner. The checklist is primarily intended for Year three Paramedical students. Although there are over twenty points to check, you'll find that it's both fun and educational to go through them. It's particularly important to spot the things you should do to avoid damaging SimMan, and to think about the reasons why he might have certain limitations!
SimMan Checklist
The purpose of this checklist is to introduce you to SimMan and give you the opportunity of familiarising yourself with the manikin. It's a good idea to work through the checklist, attempt to answer all questions, and fill in the '___blank____'s.
- The mannequin's name is "________"
- What can '_______' say to you.?
- Other sound cues such as vomiting, retching, coughing will also be heard.
- There are 2 sound outlets in this room. One comes from your patient, the other from the speakers in the ceiling.
- '_______'s' skin colour doesn’t alter, so think about how you will assess his skin colour and temperature?
- His/Her eyes are non reactive to light! So think about how you will assess the pupils?
- There are '_______' physiologically correct palpable pulses. List the lot!
- Which two '_______'(anatomical location) pulses are activated by pressure.
- How long are the pulses activated for?
- Is pulse strength related to blood pressure?
- Are the pulses synchronized to the simulated ECG.
- The airway is anatomically correct. All airway management devices can be used.
- Oral, nasal, and pharyngeal airways;
- Endotracheal tubes (both oral and nasal), ET tube should be size 7.5
- Intubation that is too deep will result in unilateral lung expansion and noises
- Laryngeal mask airways (LMA Classic and ProSeal LMA), LMA should be #4
- Needle and surgical cricothyroidotomy
- The airway has the potential for a number of complications including laryngospasm, posterior pharyngeal swelling, tongue oedema, trismus, decreased cervical range of motion and decreased compliance of the left and/or right lungs!
The mannequin does sense air flow into it's lungs.
It can only respond to adequate ventilation
- Tension Pneumothorax decompression can be performed. Sites for decompression are on both sides in the mid-clavicular line (2nd intercostal space).
You must use a 20 gauge needle for all chest decompressions.
- A needle or surgical cricothyroidotomy can be performed.
- Blood Pressure – can only be taken on the left arm.
- BP can be quantified by '_______' (insert number here) methods. Use these methods to become familiar with the process and the sounds.
For NIBP you must refer to the patient monitor NOT the LP12. (see discussion page)
- BP can be quantified by '_______' (insert number here) methods. Use these methods to become familiar with the process and the sounds.
- On which hand should you put the pulse oximeter?
- Auscultate the lungs. There a 6 speakers in the chest for auscultating lung sounds! Make sure you can locate these. Note that the volume of lung sounds can be altered.
- Listen to a minimum of 4 lung sounds and become familiar with these.
- Auscultate the heart sounds. Make sure you locate the correct speaker for the sounds. Listen to a minimum of 3 heart sounds. List these sounds.
- In order to locate any wounds or bleeding you will need to carry out a full examination!
- IV access is permanently located on the right arm. You must simulate inserting the cannulae, taking the time it would normally take you. Verbalise that you have finished and you will be advised if cannulation was successful.
- Give drugs as you would normally. IV fluids can be run through. Take care to verbalise the drug name, dose and amount you are giving. During assessments this is extremely important.
- Locate and identify the IM/SC sites. How many are there?
Note that the correct needle size is 22 gauge or smaller.
- Genitalia are normal male and female genitalia. Have a look, it's not voyeurism but research!
- '_______' Can be log rolled, but if this is done take care to protect the head. Also be aware of the location of the wires that come out of the manikin. (Aagh no you're hurting me...)
- CPR and the administration of shocks can be performed, using the normal joules used as per your protocols. Note: Do not give more than '_______' shocks in '_______' seconds.
- Generally important points:
- During the scenario it is important to VERBALISE everything you are doing.
- THINK out loud.
We are unable to read your mind.
- While in the simulation suites wear appropriate clothing.
- Fully enclosed shoes MUST be worn at all times. 'Jandals' are not permitted. The magic term here is isovaleric acid
- Gloves are always to be worn when working with '_______', as your body oils destroy his/her skin
