Talk:Simulation Standards
From WickedSim
In medical simulation we have a long way to go. Perhaps a few ideas placed on this page may bear fruit?

While my current focus is on education theories and learning models, I would like to approach the beginning debate on standards. I agree an array of standards would be of benefit to help set up the professional, operational and political boundaries of the industry.
From an educational perspective I suggest what simulation education needs, like mainstream education has used for many years, are a set of Essential Learning and Assessment Standards - designed to encourage a deep understanding of essential knowledge, skills and behaviours, plus used to plan participant learning, assess participant progress and generate outcome reports. Mainstream education review/develop these regularly during curriculum review and development (from reviewing current research, submissions, consultation with community and discussions with teachers). They usually follow strands or themes and can cover a multitude of expected outcomes.
It is surprising how much more smoothly things work when your curriculum is inclusive of an educational theory, an education model and standards which then underpin your programs. These are powerful agreed-to drivers that guide the teachers and the learners, reduce bias and help in the evaluation (read research!).
Another issue to place in the simulation education pot to be stirred slowly is catering for learning styles – we know people learn, by thinking, experimenting, reflecting, and producing. People also learn differently at different times and in different situations. We know some need the practical hands on experience and others need a more theoretical focus, others need a combination of both. This could reverse in a different set of circumstances. These are readily identified variables which will require addressing as the move towards researching measurable outcomes grows.
Maybe the SSH could facilitate a strategy where a range of experts could submit their views on some core standards catering for all the educational and operational requirements for simulation activity around the world.
I've taken the liberty of moving the above excellent suggestions to this discussion page. I hope this is ok?
