The fallout between Mentice and METI

Mentice make surgical simulators, METI, 'high-fidelity' patient simulators. Between 2002 and 2005 they had a fairly cozy agreement. But then things fell apart. Here's part of the story.

Simulation and the real patient

An exciting concept is simulating the anatomy of a specific patient, and training on that simulation (rather than encountering nasty surprises when you try a technique on that particular person)! There have been tentative reports of just this approach. Simbionix is meant to release a commercial system in 2007, but so far we've heard nothing.

People in Simulation

Here we hope to insert brief bios of people who have made a name for themselves in simulation. For example ...

David M. Gaba

One of the names in simulation. He's professor of Anaesthesia and 'associate dean for Immersive and Simulation-based Learning' at Stanford, has written a host of articles on simulation, and is prominent in researching patient safety issues and human factors. His qualifications include:

  • A biomedical engineering degree (BS, Northwestern University)
  • MD (Yale)

Common co-authors include Steven K Howard, Sara J Singer, and Abe deAnda. Here are some of his publications. Here's an early picture of his 'Comprehensive Anesthesia Simulation Environment' from 1986. His future vision of simulation in healthcare is available online from QSHC.

Dan Raemer

A bioengineer by training, Professor Raemer is based at Harvard where he heads the Center for Medical Simulation. He's President of the Society for Medical Simulation, and was a prime mover behind the journal Simulation in Healthcare, the Society's official journal. He helped establish the International Meeting on Medical Simulation (now the IMSH). One of his particular focuses is 'human factors' and the importance of crew resource management. He's affiliated with Partners Healthcare, a non-profit organization concerned with biomedical research. Prof. Raemer has published extensively. Of particular interest is his recent work on challenging authority (See for example Qual Saf Health Care. 2006 Aug;15(4):277-83).

Brendan Flanagan

Brendan Flanagan is an anaesthetist, and the director of the Southern Health Simulation and Skill Centre at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, Australia. He has been a major force behind the dissemination and popularisation of healthcare simulation in Australia over the past ten years. He has enthusiastically promoted introduction of simulation in undergraduate and postgraduate curricula in Australia. He has published a number of papers on crisis resource management, simulation, and assessment of performance, among other topics.

Samsun (Sem) Lampotang

Prof. Lampotang from the Department of Anaesthesia at the University of Florida has been particularly active in simulation, with a large number of patents related to the METI HPS. He has a substantial `boundary-crossing' presence in the Departments of Anaesthesia, Mechanical and Aerospace engineering, and Electrical/Computer Engineering at U FL. He's a Mechanical Engineer, has published widely in a variety of media, and is perhaps best known for his Virtual Anaesthesia Machine (VAM). "My overarching research interest is the promotion of patient safety through enhancement of learning and improved equipment design".

Stefan Moenk

Dr Moenk (Mönk) is 'Vice President Production Research and Development' in the University Clinic of the Mainz Department of Anesthesiology. His simulation centre website is here (predominantly published in German), with a good overview (in English) here. He has particular expertise in software development for METI; in addition Dr Mönk has published a fair bit in the scientific literature and is on the Editorial Board of the Internet Journal of Medical Simulation. The Simulation Centre Mainz of which he is a scientific director is a University-aligned commercial simulation training facility.

Michael Seropian

Michael Seropian (MD, FRCPC) is a mover and shaker. He has contributed enormously to the Oregon Simulation Alliance and is a pleasure to listen to when he talks about his substantial experience in facilitating co-operation in the simulation setting. He's co-director of the OHSU Simulation and Clinical Learning Center. He graduated from the University of Ottowa in 1990 and completed his residency training at the Mass Gen. He is a polyglot Paediatric Anaesthetist who has participated enthusiastically in IAMSE and the SSH. A member of the ASA Workgroup on Simulation Education, he has published several papers on anaesthesia, and on simulation, including a good overview on how to get started.
